Cleaning shared baby play objects

Clean a shared play object when it becomes dirty or has been mouthed, and follow its maker's care instructions. Keep cleaning products out of baby's reach.

A bag of play objects ready to inspect

Start with the object's label: can it be washed, wiped, or only spot cleaned? Ordinary soap and water remove visible dirt. In shared care, put aside an object a baby has mouthed until it can be cleaned according to the setting's policy. Do not hand a wet, freshly treated object straight back to a baby. A small cleaning routine

  • Set mouthed or visibly dirty objects aside from clean ones.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the material; clean visible soil first.
  • If sanitizing or disinfecting is needed, follow the product label and keep the product inaccessible to children.
  • Let the object dry as directed before offering it again.

AAP distinguishes cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. It also asks child-care programs whether toys that infants mouth are sanitized before other children use them. This guide does not prescribe a chemical, dilution, or schedule for every material and setting. AAP distinctions and product safety AAP shared-toy question

Observe which objects are shared or mouthed, record a practical care note for another caregiver, and ask your care provider how they handle shared toys. The safe-object guide covers small parts, while the activity guide offers play options.
